Speedy Freight opens its first branch in the EU

Speedy Freight has expanded into Europe with its first location in Orihuela Costa, Spain

Speedy Freight has expanded into Europe with its first location in Orihuela Costa, Spain.

The same-day courier service Speedy Freight has opened its first E.U. branch in the Alicante region of Spain. The brand has enjoyed a year of record growth, expanding by over 39 per cent in 2020, partly due to the demand for logistics during the COVID-19 global pandemic.

The pandemic has changed buying habits in Spain, with many consumers demanding same-day delivery.

Alongside developing key relationships with Spanish manufacturers and suppliers, Speedy Freight is also working with the Transport Exchange in Europe to hire Spanish drivers and team members to support operations.

Speedy Freight’s new branch will be managed by Ian Boardman and will be based in the Orihuela Costa area of Alicante. The branch will provide services to the provinces of Valencia and Murcia but will also be able to serve the Iberian Peninsula.

Boardman has worked across multiple regions with Speedy Freight, including Blackburn, Preston, Stoke and Stockport, where he joined as the branch’s second-ever full-time employee and eventually a franchisee.

Boardman has 30 years of experience in this industry. Working initially as a courier, he eventually worked in multiple departments, including: sales, operations, development, area management and regional management

“I used to travel to Spain a lot, and over the years I’ve totally fell in love with both the country and lifestyle,” said Ian Boardman, general manager of Speedy Freight.

“It’s such an honour to be given the chance to run Speedy Freight’s first European hub, and I can’t wait to see how the brand develops and expands in the region over the next few years.

“Hundreds of Speedy Freight clients are active in both the UK and Europe, so we’re well versed in dealing with the latest customs issues caused by Brexit.

“At a time when lots of U.K. brands are closing down their European operations, it’s really encouraging to see that we’re still able to invest and expand in the region.”

Speedy Freight was founded in 2006 with 60 branches across the U.K.
