German Doner Kebab planning for 100 new Canadian restaurants

German Doner Kebab is targeting North American expansion with the announcement of its plans to develop 100 restaurants in Canada over the next 10 years.

Its first two Canadian sites opened in British Columbia in Ottowa and Surrey last year, and the kebab franchise has further plans to open three more Canadian restaurants during 2021 – including a flagship site in Downtown Toronto scheduled to open in May.

“German Doner Kebab is a truly disruptive brand that has revolutionized the kebab industry. The landmark openings of our restaurants in Ottawa and Surrey have met our expectations, demonstrating the demand for our fast-casual offering that is bringing consumers a great product and amazing value,” said Nigel Belton, managing director for North America.

“We now have big plans for Canada and are excited about embarking on our next phase of growth in 2021 and opening what will be a flagship site in Downtown Toronto.”

GDK is based in Glasgow, Scotland, and currently has 73 locations open across the U.K., Europe, the Middle East, and now North America. Exponential growth is on the horizon, with over 700 franchises already signed to open in the coming years. This includes 47 new U.K. sites that are poised to open before the end of 2021.

“German Doner Kebab is a huge opportunity, it’s a proven global hit and brings a fast-casual dining experience that is resonating with the Millennial and Gen Z audience,” said Belton. “Our proposition is also backed by an experienced global team that supports our franchise partners with operations, supply chain, marketing, site development, and finance.”

Much of GDK’s current North American growth is thanks to the recent appointment of Michael Bruno as franchise recruitment director; bringing with him over 25 years’ experience in the F&B sector at organizations such as Focus Brands, which owns the likes of Cinnabon and Jamba.

“Michael Bruno has been a great capture for us and his experience will be invaluable to us as we develop our footprint and bring the German Doner Kebab experience to even more consumers across the region,” added Belton.
